New York City and California Announce Vaccine mandates For State Workers

Both California and New York City will require state workers to be vaccinated against Covid-19.

In New York, by mid-September, all city workers must be vaccinated or face weekly testing for Covid-19. Around 340,000 municipal workers are expected to be affected by this bill, including firefighters, NYPD, and teachers.

For high-risk workers in health care, the mandate goes into effect on August 16th.

New York City’s mayor, when announcing the new mandate, encouraged private businesses to require employees to get vaccinated.

For New Yorkers who are vaccinated or tested negative, de Blasio announced plans for a new “NYC COVID Safe” app that would allow users to show their status. The app is set to debut on August 2 as an additional tool to paper vaccination cards and the state’s Excelsior Pass.

California is expected to enforce its new mandate next month. Los Angeles has already reinstated its indoor mask mandate for everyone regardless of vaccination status.

San Francisco has announced that its 35,000 employees will have to get vaccinated, show proof of exception, or lose their job.

California’s mandate states that 246,000 state employees and two million health care workers both in the private and public sectors will have to be vaccinated.

New York City to Require Proof of Vaccination for Indoor Dining, Gyms, and Indoor Performances

New York City is the first major city to require proof of vaccination for members of the public.

Mayor Bill De Blasio announced that vaccination proof would be required not only for workers but for the public who want to dine at indoor restaurants, see indoor performances or go to the gym.

Recent vaccine mandates for city workers and $100 incentive payments have already caused a rise in vaccination rates in New York City.

“If you want to participate in our society fully, you’ve got to get vaccinated,”

-Mayor Bill De Blasio

Around 66% of adults are fully vaccinated in New York and the U.S recently reached Joe Biden’s goal to get 70% of adults in the U.S vaccinated, a month later than Biden planned.

De Blasio’s requirements for the public will start in mid-August with inspections and enforcement in September. This news comes after New York City announced it would be requiring city workers to show proof of vaccination.

New York City is Suing BP, Chevron, Exxon, Shell Over Climate Change

Earlier this month Mayor Bill de Blasio announced that New York City is filing suit against all five major oil companies for damages related to climate change.

We’re bringing the fight against climate change straight to the fossil fuel companies. As climate change continues to worsen, it’s up to the fossil fuel companies whose greed put us in this position to shoulder the cost of making New York safer and more resilient.” – Bill de Blasio

Climate Central’s report on sea level rise ranks New York as America’s most vulnerable major city for major coastal flooding and sea-level rise, putting 245,000 Big Apple residents at risk. Another study predicts that by 2030, storms as intense as Hurricane Sandy — which cost more than 40 lives and caused $19 billion in damages — are likely to hit every five years.

Given the fact that by 2100 or sooner, many areas of our five boroughs where a lot of low-income residents live will experience chronic flooding, it’s really critically important that we step up and put our money where our mouths are.” – James Calma

New York will also divest $5 billion in fossil fuel investments from its pension funds. The city’s Public Advocate, Letitia James, has been pushing for this for months.
