Mulberries and Mulberry Recipes

I grew up picking black raspberries and occasionally found interest in the deep purple gems hanging just overhead, but, it wasn’t until very recently that I took a serious look at these often unnoticed, untouched beauts.

There are two common mulberry tree species (plus many off shoot hybrids) here in the U.S. , the native red mulberry and the Asian white mulberry. The red mulberry, which reaches a height of about sixty-five feet, has rough, reddishbrown bark and the leaves are rounded, toothed, some oval shaped, some lobed. The fruit, also oval in shape, hangs from a thin, green fruit stalk and is composed of many very dark purple berries (when ripe.) Each little berry has its own seed. Red mulberry trees will be the ones that you are more likely to come across while foraging.

With the thought of beginning a silk industry in mind, white mulberry trees were imported from Asia during the 1800’s. Being too much work, this idea was quickly abandoned, though, not before this fertile tree swept its way across much of America. As the name implies, white mulberries are white with clearly visible black seeds in the center of each tiny berry.

It is not at all surprising to me that these little berries are being sold in stores as a superfood! As it turns out, mulberries mean business in the nutrition department. They are fairly high in protein; one handful contains about 3 grams of protein (for comparison- bananas are about 4% protein and mulberries are about 11%.) They are a sweet source of vitamin C, with about one handful (I don’t necessarily dig the counting’ game when it comes to food, but when I must- it is usually by the handful), a 28-30 gram serving containing around 130% of the recommended daily amount. They’re also a decent source of iron, calcium, magnesium, vitamin K, potassium, and fiber.

Mulberries are one of those foods that I believe are best enjoyed, solostyle. Still, I’ll post a recipe for a fantastic smoothie and mulberry crisp below.

Mulberry Recipes

Wild Mulberry & Celery Smoothie Recipe

  • 1 cup wild mulberries
  • 1 banana (omit if you have lower glycemic needs)
  • 1/2 cup pineapple, chopped (again, lessen or leave out for less sugar)
  • 1 cup nut or seed milk (hemp, almond, coconut milk, etc.)
  • 3-4 stalks of celery
  • Blend until smooth and enjoy!

Mulberry Crisp Recipe

Fruit Layer

  • 4 cups wild mulberries
  • 1/4 cup fresh lemon juice
  • 1 tablespoon arrowroot powder
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon (about 1 dropper ful) liquid stevia (or 1 tablespoon honey)

Crumble Topping

  • 3/4-1 cup coconut flour
  • 4 tablespoons coconut oil or ghee
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon (1 dropperful) liquid stevia
  • 1/2 teaspoon sea salt
  • (can add in ground nuts/seeds and/or oats)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
  2. Combine fruit layer ingredients in a bowl and then pour the mixture into a fitting casserole dish.
  3. Combine the crumble topping ingredients (mix in coconut flour, slowly, until it reaches a crumble consistency. Evenly distribute crumble mixture on top of the fruit layer.
  4. Bake for 40 minutes.
  5. (Serve hot or cold)

(The one rule, sans exception, of foraging: know your plant. While the benefits of eating wild plants are significant and very worthy, there is no room for error. You can, and should, take all of the time that you need to get to securely know a plant before consuming it. You must comfortably and positively identify it 100% of the time.)

I’m Depressed (I was; not anymore)

It hits me every now and then. It hits me hard. It’s debilitating. I used to smoke, drink, and eat way too much and sleep all day when I felt this way. Now I tend to watch too much TV and procrastinate and sleep all day. I cannot get anything done when I am like this. I get angry at myself. I hate this. I feel weak. I feel like I need help, yet that is the last thing I want. If I am honest, I hate feeling this way, yet I want to feel this way right now.

People are going to read this. I’m publishing this on my website. That scares me. I consider myself almost fearless, but admitting any weakness scares me. It’s not because I am one of those tough guys who refuses to admit when they are hurt or need help. It’s because I used to be a wuss who always needed help and always got hurt. And I fixed that about me. I changed. And now if I am hurt or need help, I have learned to fix myself.

But sometimes depression hits me before I even know it is coming. If I know it’s coming, I can take steps to prevent it. Once it hits me, the steps are the same, and I still know what to do, but I don’t want to do it.

Right now I want to lay in bed and sleep. I do not want to be writing this article. I do not want to admit my weakness. I do not want to feel better. I do not want a bunch of sympathy. I do not want a bunch of suggestions. I want everyone to fuck off and leave me alone.

When I was in a relationship, it was easier. I had to get over depression fast when I was in a relationship because I had to set an example. I had to be the man.

When I felt bad I would usually make my girlfriend feel good. It made me feel better. Of course, more than once I was an asshole about it. I sometimes took it all out on her, then convinced her that it was all her fault, and then apologized, and then we both felt better.

I hope I never do that again.

But now that I am single, I am alone with my thoughts.

I just made a lot of commitments with this magazine, and I have to keep moving. I don’t have time to wallow. I don’t have time to do what I have done in the past, which is to just accept the fact that I am “in a funk,” feel what I feel, and know that I will get over it.

I am prone to depression. I’ve been through a lot and sometimes memories make life hard. I am writing a book about it (or I should say I am trying to write a book about it) and it messes me up. But I always get over it because I know what to do.

      1. I exercise. Sometimes I don’t feel like I can move a pound, but I do it anyway. It’s so difficult to work out when I’m depressed. But I go to the gym, I take my time, and I move my body and I move weight. I turn my desire to self destruct into a desire to hurt myself via physical exertion.
      2. I exercise. Sometimes I don’t feel like I can move a pound, but I do it anyway. It’s so difficult to work out when I’m depressed. But I go to the gym, I take my time, and I move my body and I move weight. I turn my desire to self destruct into a desire to hurt myself via physical exertion.
      3. I make sure I get enough B vitamins. And I don’t do stupid things like go out drinking which wipes out my B vitamins and exacerbates the problem. (Please ignore the fact that I did this last night.)
      4. I get enough healthy fats, which are needed to process B vitamins.
      5. I make sure my diet is clean, even though I do crave junk food when I am depressed.
      6. I get sunlight. I sunbathe. I don’t use sunscreen. If it’s cloudy I will take vitamin D.
      7. I get grounded. I connect with the earth. I put my bare feet on the ground. I walk. I sit. I smell.
      8. I focus on the little things and on the interesting.
      9. I stay in the moment. There are no problems in the moment.
      10. I clean up. My home represents how I feel. So does my appearance. I clean myself up and I clean my home.

But I don’t feel like doing any of this right now. I don’t give a damn. I just want to feel depressed and be angry at myself for being depressed. I want to hurt. I’d like to get in the ring with someone and either beat the crap out of them or get the crap beat out of me. Either one would be good. That would be worth getting out of bed for.

But I don’t have that option.

Normally, I would give it a day or two, feel how I feel, and then start doing the list whether I wanted to or not.

I don’t have time to just let this pass. I don’t have a couple of days to feel depressed and do nothing.

So I am putting this out there. I am publishing this for all of my friends, family, and magazine readers to see. And After I publish this I am going to go running at 12am. Then I am going to get a bunch of work done no matter how hard it is. Because there is one character trait I have developed throughout my life that has helped me in many situations and will help me here. I cannot admit that I have a problem without deciding to fix it. I cannot admit that I have a weakness without choosing to strengthen myself. I cannot write this article, publish it on the website for the world to see, and then go back to bed.

I don’t know if this will help anyone. It is certainly written more for me than anyone else. But I have an idea. To insure that this article could help people, I propose that readers comment below and tell us how they deal with depression.

What do you do? Maybe you feel a little down and you know just what to do to cheer yourself up. Or maybe you suffer from clinical, debilitating depression and it is a constant battle in your life, and you know a few things that help.

Now I am going to go running. Damn. I really just want to go back to bed.

Cure Cancer Naturally

Federal Law requires that we warn you of the following: Natural methods can sometimes backfire (as can “conventional” methods). If you are pregnant, consult your physician before using any natural remedy. Any opinions put forth by this publication, its doctors, staff, and contributors are simply their opinions. It is up to you to educate yourself and discuss treatment modalities with your health care practitioners. By accepting Organic Lifestyle Magazine’s advice, you are agreeing to be fully responsible for your own health and to hold Organic Lifestyle Magazine, Inc. and its contributors free from liability.
I am not a physician; I legally cannot tell you how to cure yourself of cancer. What I can tell you is what I would do if I were to be diagnosed with cancer, diabetes, or any other serious or “chronic” disease.

First and foremost, if you are looking to cure cancer the natural way, you need to accept that diet, more than anything else, is what got you here. And diet is what will get you back to a healthy state. Produce will become your best friend.

I would start by following a full body detoxification regimen that maximizes nutrition and minimizes toxins. Digesting food, even healthy food, can be taxing to the body. Juicing and proper food combining minimizes the load on the body, easily allowing it to assimilate nutrients and spend its energy on healing. In addition, if I were to follow this program, three things would happen to my body that are necessary to restore the body’s health: the liver would begin working again; the body would absorb and properly assimilate beneficial, anti-inflammatory fatty acids; and the body would become more alkaline.

To better understand fat, the liver and gallbladder, and health aspects of the body’s PH, be sure to click on the embedded links.

This diet has certain aspects of both Dr. Budwig’s and Dr. Gerson’s protocols along with a few key differences that I believe would help speed up recovery and healing.

Juicing

Juicing is a great aid in detoxification. First and foremost, I would purchase the right kind of juicer (this is an absolute must). A centrifugal juicer will not do. The juicer has to press the juice out without high speeds or heat to ensure phytonutrients, enzymes, and other beneficial components (many of which are yet to be discovered) are not damaged. And a good juicer won’t oxidize the juice. Unfortunately these kinds of juicers are slower, more expensive, and usually more difficult to clean.

To see a comparison of some of the best juicers, check out our next article, Best Juicer.

Supplements

I would not take multi vitamin or mineral pill form supplements for this diet for two reasons:

  • Even very high quality vitamin and mineral supplements can unbalance the body
  • This protocol provides enough vitamins and minerals in the best form possible with all of the important components needed to easily absorb and assimilate them.

I would, however, take truly whole food multivitamins and certain supplements to help kick start my immune system and my body’s ability to detoxify.

The most natural, absorbable, absolutely pure multivitamin/mineral supplement is Total Nutrion Formula. You can make your own or purchase here. There are supplements that have more, but this product makes for a complete foundation that will make it easier to absorb and assimilate nutrition from the rest of your diet. And remember, it;s not how many vitamins are on the label, it’s how much quality nutrition your body assimilates.

Other supplements include Udo’s Oil 3-6-9 with DHA (full spectrum of beneficial fatty acids), Thorne Vitamin D-5000Vitalzym Systemic EnzymesThorne SFF722 (kills candida), HM Complex (heavy metal detoxification), Echinacea Plus (immune system), Blood Detox Formula and Tea, and Coptis Chinensis Extract (immune system).

I would also supplement my diet with raw, unprocessed, high quality honey (1 teaspoon twice a day) and Himalayan salt (one teaspoon a day). While alternative and conventional health practitioners recommend staying away from salt, I use unrefined sea salt that is full of trace minerals. I believe the problems associated with salt are due to the use of refined table salt. But it doesn’t take much.

Exercise

For many reasons, I would continue to exercise. I’d exercise hard and work up a sweat. If I were out of shape, I’d work up to it; I believe too many people underestimate the benefits of serious exercise. Depressed people are more likely to get sick. A better mood can help heal the body and the mind. Exercising boosts the immune system, causes the body to release endorphins, and to release toxins. The body releases more toxins through the skin and from breathing than it does through urinating and defecating.

Hydrotherapy

I would also practice hot and cold hydrotherapy to help further detoxify my blood and break down tumors. Dr. Shillington has witnessed dramatic shrinkage of tumors in one day with multiple applications of hot and cold hydrotherapy.

Sunlight

I would sit in the sun for at least 15 minutes a day. Sunlight doesn’t cause cancer (though sunburn can). Sunlight has been proven to prevent cancer. Vitamin D from its most natural source is better than any pill form of vitamin D I could take.

Fruits and Vegetables

I would be buying a lot of produce. The better the quality of produce, the faster I’d attain my goals. I would find local farmers markets that sell produce from farmers who practice organic growing methods and crop rotation. Their produce is rich with enzymes, minerals, and all the other good stuff I’d need. I’d also need a wide variety of produce, some of which may not be available from locally grown or organic sources. So I would start a garden and grow as many of my own vegetables as possible.

Fruits and vegetables would all be juiced except for apples and pineapple which I would juice and eat raw. The apples would be green, like Granny Smith apples.  I would make every effort to choose fresh, local, organic produce. If I had to pick and choose which produce would be organic, I would always choose organic apples and berries and organic root vegetables like carrots, radishes, and beets. Apples and berries are over sprayed, while root vegetables absorb toxins from the soil.  These particular fruits and vegetables are shown to contain significantly higher amounts of pesticide residue.

I’d also look for variety. For instance, heirloom tomatoes and carrots are more nutritious than their conventional counterparts. The following would be my shopping list, and would be organic whenever possible:

  • Citrus Fruit (all varieties)
  • Green Apples (Red apples contain too much sugar. Absolutely must be organic.)
  • Beets (Great for detoxifying the blood and cleansing the liver. Look for different kinds. Must be organic.)
  • Ginger (Good for nausea and digestive problems. An anti-inflammatory that promotes healthy blood circulation. Always add to juice with beets, garlic, or radishes.)
  • Pineapple (Contains a massive amount of enzymes. Loaded with vitamins and minerals. I would not eat pineapple initially, if I were diabetic.)
  • Carrots (Must be organic.)
  • Spinach (Absolutely must be organic.)
  • Rainbow Chard (Provides antioxidant protection in the form of phytonutrients and vitamin C.)
  • Garlic (Garlic contains germanium, an anti-cancer agent.)
  • Spanish Black Radish (Protects against free radicals and aids the liver. Must be organic.)
  • Tomatoes (Contain large amounts of vitamin C, lycopene, courmaric acid, and chlorogenic acid, all of which help fight cancer. Must be organic.)
  • Parsley (Increases the antioxidant capacity of the blood. Is an anti-bacterial and a blood purifier. Improves digestion of fats and is high in enzymes.)
  • Cilantro (An anti-inflammatory that fights free radicals. Must be organic.)
  • Kale
  • Lemons (Aids the liver in flushing out toxins. Helps the kidneys flush out fluids. Great source of Vitamin C.)
  • Celery and Celery Leaves (Nutrients in the fiber are released during juicing. Leaves and stems provide a wide variety of vitamins and minerals.)
  • Blueberries (Massive amounts of cancer fighting antioxidants and a wide array of vitamins and minerals. Absolutely must be organic.)

Protein

If I decided I needed more protein after the first two weeks, I would add a vegan protein such as ground hemp seeds and/or ground flax seeds to the diet. Another good choice is Pure Green Protein. These are both amazing sources of protein, so I wouldn’t need much, just a few tablespoons.  This diet combined with a few tablespoons of either flax or hemp seeds will give most athletes enough protein. It’s actually much harder to assimilate protein from cooked meat. But it is important to make sure the hemp or flax seed is ground up so it can be digested. It doesn’t matter how much protein I consume; what matters is how much my body properly assimilates. It is important that I not eat any other nuts or seeds on this routine, so I don’t upset the fatty acid balance in the diet.

Food Combining

Apples can be combined with any fruit or vegetable juice, but I wouldn’t combine any other fruits with vegetables.

Lemonade Recipe

I would make lemonade with lemons, stevia, and cayenne pepper (ground or liquid extract). I’d make as much as I wanted and would drink as much as I could.  The first thing I would consume each morning would be warm lemonade. Lemon juice aids the liver in flushing out toxins.

Coffee Enema

The most unpleasant step in this routine is the coffee enema, a necessity for the very ill because the liver may be too weak to rid the body of toxins. As tumors are broken up and absorbed by the body, they also create toxins. If I were carrying a heavy toxic load and my body could not eliminate the toxins, I would die. This is not an exaggeration. I could do everything else perfectly, kill all the cancer cells, and still die due to an overburdened, toxic liver.

coffee beansThere is the possibility I wouldn’t need the enemas. Maybe I could use a liver supplement. Maybe just eliminating toxins would be enough. But if I had any concern about liver toxicity or knew my body was trying to absorb tumor tissue, I would do coffee enemas no matter how unpleasant they may be. Besides, even if I didn’t absolutely need them, they would speed up my healing.

It is extremely important that enemas for the liver are done properly. I wouldn’t use too much coffee and I would be sure the solution is not too hot.
The Gerson Protocol includes coffee enemas every few hours, but for regular detoxification most alternative health practitioners recommend two times once or twice a week. It is important to do at least two coffee enemas within the same day between four and six hours apart because the first enema causes bile to be dumped into the small intestine, which then needs time to pass the bile into the colon where the second enema can remove it.

I would decide frequency and duration based on my illness and toxicity level. If my body were continuing to absorb tumors, I would continue with enemas throughout that process. If my tumors were gone, I would restrict this practice to one or two months.

For more information on coffee enemas and how to do them see Coffee Enema.

Dr. Budwig’s Flaxseed Oil and Quark

quarkI’d love for this regimen to be 100% vegan, but Dr. Budwig’s program calls for quark or cottage cheese for a very good reason. I looked at several alternatives and am not comfortable with the efficacy of them.

When the body is sick, the liver is overwhelmed and it cannot properly process fats and essential fatty acids. Dr. Budwig discovered the combination of flaxseed oil and quark (a type of cheese which is high in sulphurated protein) makes the fats and essential fatty acids water soluble and easily used by the body’s cells. For more information and a step-by-step guide on this, check out Dr. Budwig’s Flaxseed Oil and Quark in this issue. I believe Udo’s Oil 3-6-9 with DHA is superior to plain flaxseed oil.

Heavy Metal Chelation

HM Complex is an orally administered metal chelator that mild environmental exposures of mercury, arsenic, cadmium, lead and tin without altering excretion of other minerals, including calcium, magnesium, iron, copper and selenium.

Step by Step

(Assuming a sleep schedule of 8 hours a night from 10pm until 6am)

Days 1-3

6am

Upon waking, I would make a half gallon of lemonade with the aforementioned recipe. I would heat up about 8 ounces and drink it.

I would then prepare and do the coffee enema.

Next I would blend ¼ of a cup of organic quark (or organic cottage, goat or sheep cheese if available) with 2 tablespoons of Udo’s Oil 3-6-9 with DHA. I would add a pinch of Himalaya salt (not even enough to taste) and a tablespoon of unrefined honey and eat.

Then I would exercise hard and get sweaty. After exercise I would complete hot and cold hydrotherapy. I like to go to the gym and do a nice workout and follow it up with the dry sauna turned all the way up for five minutes followed by 1 minute in a cold shower.

Note: I would drink lemonade as much as I can throughout the day, every day.

9am

I would take the above supplements with the juice of 2 apples, 5 carrots, 1 to 2 stalks of kale, ¼ a beet, to taste (this is assuming medium sized produce) or I would make citrus juice. I would alternate juices, depending on my mood and cravings.

12am

I would eat as much fresh pineapple as I wanted with a whole raw apple followed by the quark and Udo’s Oil.

3pm

6pm

My least favorite part of the day would be 6pm because I would follow a coffee enema with equally unpleasant juice. I would make apple juice for the base with garlic, beets, Spanish black radish, cilantro, parsley, tomatoes, and any other fresh vegetables. The garlic, beets, and Spanish black radish can and most likely will cause an upset stomach for a few minutes. How much of these vegetables I incorporate into the juice would depend on my tolerance at the time. (In my experience, tolerance for these juices builds over time).

9pm

I would make some more quark and Udo’s Oil to take along with the following supplements:

Days 4-7

The only difference between days 4-7 and days 1-3 is that Captomer should not be taken, and one may need to consider replacing it with Thorne Heavy Metal Support.

Week 2

The same as week 1, except eliminate Echinacea and Coptis Chinensis. Resume the following week and  continue to take them on alternate weeks.
I would repeat this week for 4 to 8 weeks depending on the severity of disease. Once I run out of supplements, with the exception of UDO’s Oil, I would simply quit taking them.

Month 2 (or Month 3)

I would come off of the coffee enemas. I would purchase one new supplement not mentioned above called Thorne Liver Cleanse SF769. My concern is that my liver may grow addicted to caffeine and will not work as well without the aid of supplementation.

I would continue this phase of the diet as long as it takes for me to feel that my health is at optimal working condition.

Coming Off the Diet

Coming off of a diet like this should be done gradually and carefully. Lots of raw fresh vegetables and fruits should always be one’s main staples, but especially so after a detoxification regimen and/or a fast. When coming off of this diet I would not eat starchy foods immediately. Doing so could actually kill me. My colon would no longer have what it needs to digest starchy foods like mashed potatoes or white rice.

I would start eating salads and smoothies first and, if I were to incorporate cooked foods, I would slowly include oatmeal, quinoa, and brown rice.

Conclusion

Knowing what I know about disease and health, this is exactly what I would do to restore my health, regardless of the disease. If I didn’t know what I know, I would do considerable research on alternative treatments and read everything and anything I could about Dr. Budwig and Dr. Gerson.

Remember, our health is our responsibility. Education is key.

Budwig Cancer Cure

A Simple and Natural Cure for Cancer

Most people dismiss the idea that you can cure any cancer simply, easily, and naturally with a 90% success rate. People in general do not put much faith in alternative medicine or natural cures. Even those who subscribe to the idea of a natural and organic lifestyle tend to dismiss natural cancer treatments, thinking that cancer is too big, too strong, and too deadly for alternative medicine.

Meet Dr. Johanna Budwig

Believe it or not, Dr. Johanna Budwig, a German biochemist with a Ph.D in natural science, cured cancer with a 90% success rate with a very simple, natural, and inexpensive treatment. She was nominated for the Nobel Prize in medicine six times.

Dr. Budwig underwent medical training, was schooled in pharmaceutical science, physics, botany, and biology, and was one of the foremost experts in fats. She lived to the ripe old age of 94.

What Have You Got to Lose?

What many people do not know is that most cancers progress very slowly.  Dr. Budwig said that her protocol can restore health to most people in less than three months. Some people have seen cancer completely eradicated in just a few weeks or even days. While conventional doctors typically try to rush their patients into chemotherapy as soon as possible, consider this: cancer typically kills very slowly. Chemotherapy, on the other hand, kills very quickly.

Why not try this alternative cure?

Quark and Flaxseed Oil

Dr. Budwig’s protocol includes a proper diet, which for the unhealthy is likely to be a radical lifestyle change (but so are chemotherapy treatments). Dr. Budwig allows no refined sugars and no animal proteins except for quark (a type of cheese) or cottage cheese.  But the most important part of her program, and certainly the most well known, is the mixture of quark and flaxseed oil.

In the video on the next page, Sandra Olson shows the recipe for the Budwig Protocol. She uses cottage cheese instead of quark.

Fat is fat soluble, which means it has to be processed by bile from the liver and gallbladder. When someone is sick enough to have cancer (or any other inflammatory disease for that matter), their ability to process and absorb fats is drastically reduced. Quark and cottage cheese are rich in sulphurated proteins. When these proteins are mixed with fat, the fat becomes water soluble and no longer needs the liver’s help to be absorbed into the body’s cells. Furthermore, even a healthy body can only assimilated so much fat at once when the fat is not water soluble. Dr. Budwig’s method saturates the body with omega 3 anti-inflammatory fatty acids, a process which oxidizes the cells and restores health at a cellular level.

It’s Not Just for Cancer

Diseases thrive on unhealthy cells and inflammation. In fact, disease is the symptom of unhealthy cells. Raymond Francis put it best, “There is only one disease (malfunctioning cells), and only two causes of disease(nutrition deficiency and toxicity).” Most of our modern diseases from diabetes to cancer to arthritis are inflammatory diseases.

Budwig’s Recipe

You will need organic, cold pressed flaxseed oil and organic quark or organic cottage cheese and a blender (since you are mixing a small amount, an immersion blender works best, or you can use a mixer with a single beater). If you can get cottage cheese or quark made with fresh raw (unpasteurized and non-homogenized) milk, then get it as long as it is organic.

The ratio is 1 tablespoon of flaxseed oil to 2 tablespoons of quark or cottage cheese thoroughly blended so that the oil is no longer visible. Using more quark or cottage cheese is fine, and preferable to not using enough. A total of three to six tablespoons of flaxseed oil a day one is recommended.

Budwig’s Muesli Recipe

Blend 3 Tablespoons of organic flaxseed oil with 6 Tablespoons of low-fat (less than 2%) organic Quark or Cottage Cheese .  Blend until the oil has disappeared. If the mixture is too thick, you can add 1-3 tablespoons of goat’s milk. Do not add water or juice while blending the oil and cheese.

Grind 2 tablespoons of flax seeds and add to the mixture. (Use only freshly ground seeds.)

Mix in 1 teaspoon of raw (non-pasteurized) honey.

Add fruit, nuts or seeds (soak first!), and spices as desired.

Quark Alternatives

Organic cottage cheese can be used in place of quark. Yogurt or kefir can also be used in place of quark but are considered less optimal. The ration is also higher: 3 tablespoons of yogurt or kefir to 1 tablespoon of oil.

Vegan Alternatives

We at OLM tried to find a vegan substitute for quark, but were unsuccessful in finding one high enough in sulphurated protein. There were some vegan sulphurated protein capsules, but the company that we would have recommended quit making them and now we can’t find any available.

Bionatures.com offers “companion nutrients” with sulphurated protein already mixed with flaxseed oil. It should be noted that Dr. Budwig was not a fan of supplements and she believed the quark/oil should be eaten immediately after mixing.

Dr. Max Gerson – Persecuted for Curing Cancer Naturally

Treating disease through nutritional therapy and detoxification is not a new treatment modality. Dr. Max Gerson discovered the power of healing through nutrition and detoxification more than eighty years ago.

Gerson suffered from migraines since childhood. His early experiments with diet were conducted as a means to find a cure. After becoming an M.D., he recommended his successful migraine diet to his patients, one of whom also suffered from lupus vulgaris (skin tuberculosis). The diet rid the man of migraines, and his skin lesions disappeared as well.

Albert Schweitzer and Max Gerson become lifelong friends after Dr. Gerson’s therapy cured Schweitzer of his Type II diabetes, cured Albert’s daughter of a chronic skin condition, and saved the life of Albert’s wife, suffering from tuberculosis of the lung, which had not responded to conventional treatment.

As Dr. Gerson continued to treat and cure tuberculosis patients, word spread. A well known and well respected physician set up a carefully monitored, in-house, hospital trial to replicate the results of the Gerson Therapy, but the diet wasn’t working. The patients made no progress towards recovery; several actually worsened. The hospital was on the brink of ending the trial when a nurse was caught sneaking prohibited food into the ward. Once the Gerson Therapy diet was strictly enforced, the patients rapidly responded to treatment. Of 450 lupus vulgaris patients – patients suffering from a hideous incurable disease – 446 were cured.

As is often the case when alternative treatments prevail, Dr. Gerson became the object of derision and suspicion by critics in the medical community. It didn’t matter that his results had been independently verified in the hospital study, or that sanatoriums were reporting great success treating their patients with his diet therapy. His critics accused him of falsifying data, saying Gerson’s patients had never suffered from lupus vulgaris.

During this time a woman with an advanced case of inoperable cancer of the bile duct heard of Gerson’s success in treating both tuberculosis and arthritis. She asked Dr. Gerson for help, but he didn’t want to treat her, fearing an attempt at cancer treatment would increase the professional backlash. But the woman insisted, telling him she would sign a statement holding him harmless if the treatment did not work. She finally convinced him. After she was cured, she brought two relatives with cancer to him for treatment, whom he also cured.

Dr. Gerson decided to appease his critics by conducting a new study. No patient would be included in the study unless two doctors independently confirmed the diagnosis prior to treatment. Unfortunately, Gerson’s research was left behind when he fled Nazi Germany.

Though Dr. Gerson was the first to say he didn’t know why the treatment worked on those first three cancer patients, he was intrigued by the possibility of successfully treating cancer. In Vienna he attempted to treat six more cancer patients, without success. In Paris he treated seven, with three successes.

When he immigrated to the United States and became licensed to practice, he again began treating cancer patients. Gerson said, “On the one side, the knife of the AMA was at my throat and on my back. I had only terminal cases. If I had not saved them, my clinic would have been a death house. Some of the cases were brought on stretchers. They couldn’t walk. They could no longer eat. It was very, very difficult. So, I really had to work out a treatment that could help these far advanced cases.”

As he continued to refine his treatment, he came to the conclusion that the disease process is essentially the same in all degenerative diseases.

He believed the digestive tract to be the most important part of our bodies. If digestion does not work properly, the body and its other organs are not properly nourished. And if digestion does not work properly, all waste products—toxins and poisons—are not eliminated. Instead they accumulate in our bodies. If the liver is overwhelmed, good health is impossible. During the Gerson treatment, the body is flooded with nutrients, oxidizing enzymes, and potassium. No added salt or fats other than flaxseed oil are allowed. Freshly pressed organic fruit and vegetable juices are given hourly. Coffee enemas are administered several times daily. As tumors die, the mass of dead cells are absorbed. They flood the bloodstream. Without proper detoxification, poisons accumulate, and patients, even those whose cancer has been eradicated, will die. Coffee enemas aid in detoxification and decrease pain.

Gerson believed our health begins with the quality of the soil in which our food is grown. “Our soil must be normal, no artificial fertilizers should be used, no poisons, no sprays which go into the soil and poison it. Whatever grows on a poisoned soil carries poison, too. And that is our food, our fruit and vegetables. I am convinced that the soil is our external metabolism. It is not really far removed from our bodies. We depend on it. But our modern food, the “normal” food people eat is bottled, poisoned, canned, color added, powdered, frozen, dipped in acids, sprayed-no longer normal. We no longer have living, normal food, our food and drink is a mass of dead, poisoned material, and one cannot cure very sick people by adding poisons to their systems.”

And he believed our diet was also the cause of disease. “We cannot detoxify our bodies when we add poisons through our food which is one of the reasons why cancer is so much on the increase. Saving time in the kitchen is fine but the consequences are terrible. Thirty or fifty years ago cancer was a disease of old age. Only elderly people whose liver was no longer working well – was worn out-became sick. They contracted cancer when they were 60 to 70 years old and cancer was a rare disease. Everybody knows that. And now four, even going on one out of three dies of cancer. Now in the second generation it is even worse. The poor children get leukemias more and more. There is no country which has so much leukemia as this country (USA), no country in the world. That is our fault. Ice cream is made with invert sugar. Coca-Cola contains phosphoric acid. Is it surprising that children get degenerative disease?”

These words were spoken by Gerson in a speech delivered in 1956. By the ‘50s our food was toxic and processed. By the ‘50s cancer and other diseases were on the rise due to diet, after petroleum based fertilizers and pesticides became the norm, a mere 10-15 years after processed foods overran our grocery shelves.

As was the case in Germany so many years ago, Max Gerson’s alternative therapy has long been dismissed by mainstream medicine, despite its success. A Stephen Kroschel documentary, Dying to Have Known interviews Max Gerson’s family members who carry on his work, Gerson patients, and conventional doctors who denounce the Gerson Therapy.

Dr. Dean Edell, a well known conventional doctor, states, “I don’t think the Gerson therapy has ever cured a terminally ill patient. People get very confused by this.

“This is a world of science, a world of data. I always like to think of it as a courtroom, the courtroom of science and medicine. You don’t send somebody to jail or convict somebody without hard, hard evidence.

“And Gerson has been looked at many, many times. If you think of basically what’s in Gerson therapy, you really wouldn’t expect it to cure cancer. But people… Sometimes cancer cures itself. There is a rate of cancer <that> goes away by itself.

“Some people didn’t really have cancer. It’s a misdiagnosis. Sometimes people had chemotherapy many months before. And then try, for instance, Gerson therapy. They get better and attribute it to the Gerson therapy. Or whatever they’ve done.
“So no I don’t think there’s any evidence that anybody has ever been cured by Gerson therapy.”

Kroschel asked Dr. Wallace Sampson, Clinical Professor Emeritus at Stanford University and Editor of the Scientific Review of Alternative Medicine what it would take for him to be convinced or even persuaded a slight bit that the Gerson therapy has credibility.

Sampson said, “Well, first of all they’d have to show some reason why it should work. We know how cancers behave and we know the kinds of things that cause cancer. So they’d have to come up with some kind of a believable theory of why their diet should work. But second of all, they’d have to convince us that everything we know about it in the last 50 years is wrong and they’re right. Now how are they going to come up with material like that? That’s impossible. They don’t have it.”

After both of these doctors claimed no one had ever been cured by the Gerson therapy, Kroschel selected two patient files at random and asked if they would agree to an interview.

The first was a woman who had been cancer free for 6 years following treatment from melanoma which had spread to her liver, causing two large tumors. Her oncologist had told her she had 3-4 months to live.

She stayed at the Gerson clinic for two weeks and then followed the diet at home for 10 months before having a new CT scan. The scan was clear. She had attended a cancer support group in which she was the only patient pursuing alternative treatment. Every other member of her support group died.

The second case was a man suffering from testicular cancer who has been cancer free for 10 years. When he returned to his oncologist after just “a couple months” on the Gerson diet, his CT scan showed he was cancer free. His doctor said it was a miracle. The film includes many more amazing interviews, stories of men and women who completely regained their health and vitality.

Kroschel also interviews doctors in other countries who are successfully treating cancer patients with the Gerson Therapy. The Loma Linda Clinic in Japan is run by two doctors, one of whom, Prof. Yoshihiko Hoshino, M.D., developed colon cancer sixteen years ago that metastasized to his liver. He cured his own cancer through the Gerson Therapy and has remained cancer free for fifteen years. Through the clinic, they have treated more than 500 cancer patients using the Gerson Therapy.

The Gerson Therapy has been used to successfully fight cancer and other degenerative diseases for more than 80 years, and yet, a quick search on the Internet reveals many sites that claim the Gerson Therapy to be nothing short of quackery.

Conventional medicine continues to dismiss the success of plant based nutritional therapy. As long as pharmaceutical companies remain the driving force behind conventional medicine and remain in control of the medical journals, pharmaceutical treatment will prevail.

As plant based nutritional therapy gains in popularity, as cancer survivors tell their stories, the tide will turn. Hopefully, we will reach that tipping point soon.

Cancer Cure (for Dogs Only, with Raw Dog Food Recipe)

He had cancer, 7 lumps on his leg. He also had terrible breath, was overweight, had diarrhea, and he shed like crazy.

I adopted three dogs recently, one from the Fulton County Animal Shelter, and two from an individual who was advised to put one of them down.

Dayton, rescued from the animal shelter, is part pit bull, part Labrador. He is a dog with a lot of spunk and the attention span of a gnat, but he sure is a lot of fun. When I first got him he shed like crazy, had skin diseases, a nasty cough, bloody gums, and the worst doggy breath I have ever had the misfortune to smell.

Molly was severely overweight and had bleeding gums, staff infected skin rashes, ear mites, and just all kinds of parasites everywhere. She was contagious and really nasty. Oh, and of course, she shed like crazy (not just fur either). She is part Husky, German Sheppard, and chow. She’s a quite an obedient dog that has lots of love to share (Too much love! She keeps humping the other dogs! And she’s a female?!?!?!).

Rudy is part Beagle, and Dalmatian, and some kind of pointer (I am told). He is a people pleaser, always wanting to make people happy. He had cancer, 7 lumps on his leg. He also had terrible breath, was overweight (though not as much as Molly), had diarrhea, and (you may have guessed) he shed like crazy.

I put them all on the same diet. I found an organic dry dog food with meat as its main ingredient (no soy, corn, wheat, or animal bi-products). To every bowl of dried food I added an oil supplement 3-6-9 blend, Shillington, Body Balance (you can also make your own, see the recipe here), Total Nutrition Powder (I made my own, but it’s time consuming. You can get it from Dr. Shillington.), a lot of organic garlic powder, Nordic Naturals Cod Liver Oil, systemic enzymes, digestive enzymes, a tablespoon or two of coconut oil, and two raw eggs. I also added garlic, and increased garlic as they got used to it. I’ve read all about how garlic may be bad for dogs (and humans) but not in my experience. None of them were crazy about the dog food at first. The food would sit for hours before they would eat just enough to get rid of their hunger pains. But now, just two months later, they lick every bit of Total Nutrition Powder off the bowl. In fact, you should have seen the look I got today when I didn’t have time to feed them with all the good stuff. They were begging for food and it was getting late and I was so busy, I just poured some dry food in their bowls. They looked at me like I lost my mind. Four hours later the food was still sitting there and they are waiting to be properly fed.

In addition, for the first week, I gave them calcium and magnesium via this trick (used the leftover eggs in their food), Homemade Calcium and Magnesium.

It’s not just the eggs they love (though they do love the eggs). I have fed them with all of the other ingredients when I ran out of eggs and they still ate every bite.

Rudy’s cancer is almost completely gone. There is still one lump. It is much softer and getting smaller every day. It was a major battle to get rid of Molly’s ear mites, but they are gone, too. All of their other ailments are gone. Molly has dropped so much weight (I did restrict her food intake) that she has a lot of loose skin, but it is tightening up and she is vibrant and playful, a far cry from her old lethargic personality.

They shed so much less!!! They all get an itch every now and then, a flea no doubt, but we’ve had no infestations.

Did you know that our digestive system is not so different from a dog? Sure there are some differences, but how many times have you heard “people food is bad for dogs”? No worse than it is for rats, cats, bears, or humans! If people with cancer or any other “incurable” disease ate the exact same diet as my dogs, I bet they would return to health. You’re maybe thinking, “Eating dog food? Gross!” Well, yeah, maybe, but it sure isn’t as gross as the conventional meat you eat from restaurants and grocery stores. THAT’S WHAT’S DISGUSTING!

The man who had Rudy and Molly is of a conventional mind. He was buying them the most expensive dog food the vet had to offer and wondering why he kept having to take them to see the vet. This dog food was nothing but fillers like wheat and soy, along with overly processed diseased meat and meat by-products thrown in. I’m sure the high prices were justified by dumping in every single chemically, artificially produced vitamin and mineral ever printed in a study for dogs.

It wasn’t doing them any good, obviously. But now they are happy, healthy, vibrant, and looking very fit.

Oh, and I’m sure there is probably some law against saying I can cure cancer in a dog. So I won’t say it. Even though Rudy had had one tumor removed and declared malignant and his vet wanted to put him down when the “cancer” returned with a vengeance, we’ll do what we’re forced to do when discussing the human recovery from non-conventional means and say the dog is recovering from what was an obvious misdiagnosis. We know the truth. So does Rudy.

Update: I’ve had a lot more dogs and helped them heal a lot of diseases and then found them new homes. This is very similar to what I feed my dogs nowadays, along with Total Nutrition Formula (purchase here, or make it yourself). I don’t use all the other supplements anymore, but they are below under “recommended Supplements.”

Update: I kept a husky. I don’t have any other dogs and I focus my healing on humans now. She’s very healthy with an amazing coat. I feed her raw free-range beef, a raw egg, and a variety of vegetable scraps, as well as other leftovers from our food like quinoa and brown rice. She gets a pound of beef a day. Every now and then I will throw in total nutrtion. She’s been on this diet for years and she looks amazing. Never a single problem.

80% Raw Food Diet

One of the most commonly asked questions we receive at OLM is, “What one thing can I do to be healthier?” A diet of primarily raw fresh vegetables and fruits is the foundation for good health. If you are not as healthy as you would like to be, there is nothing more important. Even if you smoke, or don’t eat organic, and/or don’t exercise, adopting a raw food diet is still our first recommendation. We even recommend eating a raw food diet before we recommend supplements.

This takes people by surprise, especially since I own a supplement store. I have plenty of supplements on hand for acute health issues and first aid, but I only take Total Nutrition Formula, SF722, and systemic enzymes regularly.

There is a lot of controversy as to whether or not eating 100% raw is healthy. We do believe that a 100% raw food diet can be very healthy if done right with enough variety. If you are interested in eating 100% raw this article can help you get started. We also recommend you get to know Raw Chef Dan (see next article). But we recommend going at least 80% raw for practical reasons. And, if you cut out junk food completely (this includes “organic” junk food) and make sure that two of your three daily meals as well as any and all snacks are raw fresh fruits and vegetables (1:4 ratio), you will achieve a significantly higher level of health. For many people, eating this way rids the body of disease and ailments. For individuals who have led a toxic lifestyle for too long, more help is needed to restore the body to health.

People often point to the fact that there is not enough variety in a raw food diet to maintain good health. If a raw food diet to you means carrot sticks, celery and apples, then you’re right. My daily routine consists of a salad for breakfast and sometimes for lunch and/or dinner. On the days I do not have two salads, I have a smoothie. How do I get variety if I eat almost the same thing every day? Each of my salads contains at least 10 different kinds of vegetables. I get more nutrition in one salad than most people get in a whole week, maybe a month. My smoothies are nothing to scoff at, either. One salad and/or smoothie and I know I am set for the day. I must admit I do still love to eat, so I actually eat too much. Though I also work out pretty heavily on a regular basis, I imagine I could do better with about half the calories I consume.

My Daily Salad

Want to know how to make an incredible salad? Here are the main ingredients for my salad:

  • Spinach
  • Arugula
  • Collard Greens
  • Spring mix
  • Dandelion
  • Leeks
  • Red onions
  • Red cabbage
  • Red bell pepper
  • Rainbow chard
  • Beet greens
  • Grated beet root
  • Graded carrots
  • Graded zucchini
  • Cucumbers
  • Cilantro
  • Pomegranate (seed)
  • Raisins
  • Sesame seeds
  • Ground papaya seeds
  • Avocado

I also throw in chick peas, a three bean salad combination, and/or some raw sheep cheese I get at my local farmers’ market. I always put two to three soft boiled eggs in my salad. Obviously I am not a vegan, but if you are, this salad is good enough without the cheese and eggs. The salad is also great with chicken or steak.

Update: Now I don’t do the cheese. I don’t do meat either. I still eat eggs, but am very considerate of where and how they are sourced. The avocado makes it so I don’t miss the cheese. But, for those who are not vegan, and concerned about getting enough calories, add what you want. Just please make sure all animal products were as humanely treated and healthy as possible.

There are tons of recipes for raw and healthy salad dressings. I love my own creation.

My Balsamic Salad Dressing Recipe

To make my salad dressing, I start with equal parts oil and vinegar (keep in mind that both olive oil and balsamic vinegar have a lot of imitators).

  • 3/4 cup of flax seed oil
  • 1/4 cup of coconut oil
  • 1/2 cup of balsamic vinegar
  • 1/2 cup of apple cider vinegar
  • 6 tablespoons turmeric
  • 1 table spoon basil
  • Two teaspoons unrefined sea salt
  • Two teaspoons fresh ground pepper
  • Two tablespoons Dijon mustard

Do it all to taste if you want, but stay heavy on the turmeric; it’s very good for you, and it’s the most important ingredient to this recipe.

This salad dressing will have even the pickiest kids eating vegetables. It’s very versatile. Use it as a dip, a marinade, or whatever. It’s amazing.

Obviously this is not a 100% raw salad. But it’s mostly raw and very healthy. If you want to adopt a 100% raw food diet then find a great raw salad dressing and skip the peas, beans, eggs, and cheese. It’ll be healthier that way too.

Super Antioxidant Smoothie

I don’t have a smoothie every day. For health, nothing beats a great salad. But I do crave smoothies a few times a week.

  • 1 cup apple juice
  • 1 cup fresh berries
  • ½ pomegranate (seeds)
  • 1 raw egg (organic only!)
  • ½ banana
  • 1 large kale leaf
  • 2 tablespoons nutrition powder (see below)
  • 1 tablespoon Udo’s Oil with DHA

Nutrition Powder

Total Nutrition Formula, is the best nutritional support available. You can also make your own.  I don’t do smoothies everyday (salads are better), but when ever I do, I add my nutrition powder.

Conclusion

It takes time to adapt to a healthy lifestyle. I don’t spend much on groceries, but that’s because I’ve learned where and how to shop for the best deals. Local organic farmers’ markets are the best places to get the healthiest produce for a fraction of the cost you would spend at a conventional grocery store. It used to take me a lot of time to make smoothies and salads but I’ve learned to make them very quickly. I still spend more time than most preparing food, but health is my priority, my hobby, my most important investment. I’ll take the time.
