Animal Farm Becomes Certified Organic

In a move truly deserving of the comment “You can’t make this stuff up,” illustrating the widening divide in the organic community the USDA’s National Organic Program announced this week that they would require public interest groups, educators, and the public to get their blessing before using the USDA organic logo in media coverage.

Maybe this edict isn’t entirely Orwellian, and maybe it’s not Stalinistic, but it sure smacks of how the press operates under Premier Vladimir Putin.

After months of pointed criticism, and press coverage,of a series of allegedly illegal power grabs by the USDA, stripping authority Congress vested in the advisory panel it created, the National Organic Standards Board (NOSB), the USDA has figured out a way to resolve the dispute — control the message.

Their quarterly newsletter, distributed this week, recapped the recent NOSB meeting in San Antonio, Texas. It was one of the most contentious meetings in the history of the organic movement. It included a protest that initially shut down the proceedings and a parliamentary challenge to the illegal power grab by NOP staff director Miles McEvoy.

The protest ended after police came in for an arrest and the challenge, under Roberts Rules of Order, endorsed by a number of board members, only ended after a long adjournment where Mr. McEvoy conferred with his staff (and superiors and lawyers in Washington by phone) and subsequently threatened to shut the entire meeting down and send everyone home if the parliamentary motion challenging his authority wasn’t withdrawn.

But if you read the USDA’s Organic Integrity Quarterly you might question the “accuracy” of their story. There’s not a word of any dispute at the meeting even though, besides the protests, numerous citizens and public interest groups, in formal written and oral testimony, condemned the USDA’s actions.

And this meeting came on the heels of a letter written to USDA Secretary Tom Vilsack by the two primary authors of the Organic Foods Production Act, the law that gave the USDA the authority to establish the NOP in the first place. Senator Patrick Leahy and Representative Peter DeFazio clearly stated that the USDA moves were a violation of congressional intent and requested their immediate reversal.

Not a word about any of this in the USDA’s quarterly organic newsletter.

But now the USDA wants to read anything The Cornucopia Institute, a corporate and governmental watchdog in the organic arena, or any other public interest group intends to publish if we want to use the USDA organic logo.  This logo is owned by the citizens of the United States of America.

Now don’t get me wrong. Their advice to commercial interests, to have their certifiers review labels where they might use the USDA seal, for compliance with the law, is sound. But stifling constitutionally protected free speech? No, that’s a gross overstep of power.

Cornucopia’s Board President, a third-generation certified organic farmer from Durand, Wisconsin, Helen Kees, after reading this newsletter instructed Cornucopia staff to “Give ‘em hell” and included a referral to an experienced constitutional lawyer. We doubt it that will be necessary. Someone at the USDA will be wise enough to not kick that hornet’s nest.

The former Soviet comic Yakov Smirnoff recently appeared on National Public Radio. He talked about how his standup routine was censored before he immigrated to the U.S. NPR’s Bob Garfield said, “He wasn’t making it up, well, except for the name, ‘Department of Jokes,’ which was actually the Humor Department of the Censorship Apparatus within the Soviet Ministry of Culture.”

So I guess I should have submitted this commentary for Mr. McEvoy to refer to his “Department of Sanitation” within the USDA Ministry of Culture.

The divide between the corporate sector/USDA and traditional organic agriculturalists is actually no laughing matter.

In addition to Mr. Leahy and Mr. DeFazio, virtually every public interest group, that monitors the organic industry, along with consumers and farmers, called for the reversal of the heavy-handed moves by the USDA alleging that they are going to undercut the credibility of the organic label.  Only powerful industry interests are siding with the regulators.

And who is on the other side? The clout-heavy industry lobby group, Organic Trade Association, United Natural Foods Incorporated (the largest organic food distributor), Stonyfield and the nation’s largest organic certifier, CCOF.

More recently, and disturbingly, the umbrella group for the nation’s organic certifiers, the independent inspectors/auditors that act as agents of the USDA, overseeing farms and giant corporate processors alike, have chimed in, coming to the USDA’s defense.

The certifiers are supposed to be the independent umpires. The only thing that assures that they will not be biased, in favor of their clients who write them their paychecks, is the judicious oversight of the USDA’s accreditation and auditing of these entities. And now you have them buttering up Mr. McEvoy and helping in his damage control campaign? How unseemly.

What makes it even more unseemly is the fact that the board of directors at two of the largest certifiers, CCOF and OCIA, say they never were informed by their staff of their organization’s endorsement of the controversial moves at the USDA.

The organic movement has always been about transparent debate and the focal point has always been at the semi-annual meetings of the National Organic Standards Board. That board can no longer set its own work plan and agenda, and Mr. McEvoy has now effectively appointed himself co-chairman of the board.

All that would be bad enough but now he wants to control the news and censor dissent. Those of us who care deeply about the ethical precepts that the organic movement was founded upon will not let that happen.

Marijuana Laws by State

Click here for full size map.

What is Marijuana Decriminalization?

Marijuana decriminalization eliminates criminal penalties, such as extended incarceration for possession of smaller amounts of cannabis.

The typical penalties for people caught possessing marijuana within decriminalized limits (these limits may be anywhere from 10 to 100 grams depending on the state’s laws) are fines, usually a few hundred dollars. For first offenses, short jail sentences may also be imposed in states with stricter decriminalization laws. Subsequent offenses, and people caught with possessing larger amounts of marijuana (outside the decriminalized limits), typically receive much harsher penalties.

Decriminalization and medical marijuana laws are a step in the right direction, but we feel that marijuana should be legal in every state.  Polls show that the majority of public opinion has finally moved in this direction as well.

The problem is that lawmakers, by nature, are generally conservative, and typically slow to respond (more often than not, they didn’t get to where they are by being forward, progressive thinkers). They need to hear from us! If you think that marijuana should be legal, like we do, call your local representatives and let them know how you feel.

States That Have Decriminalized Marijuana:

  • Alaska
  • Arizona
  • California
  • Connecticut
  • Maine

Political Campaigns

Just an idea…

I viewed this last presidential campaign through opened eyes; I used to be much more naive than I am today. Oh, I knew politicians lied, that they are corrupt. What you see is never what you get. But before I worked with Organic Lifestyle Magazine, I wasn’t really aware that corporations run this country. Yes, that is one thing I can give Monsanto credit for—they opened my eyes to the truth.

I hoped President Obama was telling us the truth when he said he was against big business and special interests running the country. Then he appointed Vilsack, a Monsanto man through and through, as the Secretary of Agriculture. And before I could pick myself up off the floor, President Obama tells us his version of healthcare for all is to pass a law to force us to pay our hard earned money to crooked insurance companies. At that point, I was done. No fork test needed.

So after the 2012 election I thought about the obscene amount of money it takes to run a successful campaign and where all that money comes from. I knew that those deep, deep pockets bought votes as well as future favors from the elected officials they put in office. That’s how the system works. So why not change the system?

If campaigns were free, corruption of our politicians by the money machine would end. And other benefits would ensue.

Imagine a website dedicated to the political election process. Each politician would have a profile listed with his full biography (one that has been well vetted for truth) along with his full voting and attendance record for any prior office held. He or she could state their stance on the issues and make promises—officially, publically, permanently. And if elected in office, that record for keeping or ignoring those promises would become part of the permanent public record as well. Candidates could hold debates on the website and voters could view those debates at their leisure. It would be so much easier to evaluate the similarities and the differences between the candidates. And so easy to separate lies from the truth. Voting records don’t lie.

According to Internet World Stats 78.6% of North Americans use the Internet. If we ensure that every public library houses public computers, our political website would be available to all Americans. But we could make it even easier. According to Statistic Brain. 99% of Americans own at least one television.  One dedicated television station could mirror the website, scrolling the same information.

No more TV or radio campaigns. No print costs. No touring. No outside marketing of any kind. No bought and paid for candidates. No cost at all to the politicians. Of course we would have to come up with a means to select candidates so that only serious, qualified individuals were allowed on the site. But we could figure that out.

Remember when I said there could be added benefits? Today’s politicians begin campaigning for their next election on the day they take office. With this new system, that practice would end, and our elected officials could focus on doing the jobs they were elected to do.

Another benefit, dare I say it? There would be no need for a party system. Imagine that! The best candidate could actually rise to the top and win! And all those Senators and Representatives could vote their conscience instead of worrying about Republican vs. Democrat party lines. And then judges appointed to the Supreme Court, the United States Courts of Appeals, and the Unites States district courts could be appointed the same way! No party affiliations to muck up their rulings!

And while we are at it, we could decide that women should have equal rights by law, that a line item veto is in the best interest of the country, and that poisoning our water and our food supply is not the job of our government. I know that’s not everything, but it would be a good start, don’t you think?

The Secret of Oz

If only everyone would watch this film

Why are we as people and as a nation in so much debt? Why do our corporations continue to enslave us and brainwash us? Why are we always at war? Why do corporations control our government? Why are our medical system, food system, and educational system so corrupt? Why do we incarcerate so many people? Why is our nation failing financially? And what could we do to fix all of this?

This video explains it very well. If only everyone would watch it.

Big Business

Big Business, the term never used to turn my stomach. Now it does.

In my years of naiveté, the words “big business” meant industry, lots of jobs, lots of money, philanthropy. Corporate America was dependable, responsible. Men and women chose a career, worked until retirement, and then lived off their pensions. Corporations were benevolent structures, the backbone of the American economy.

Then I watched as baby boomers, who worked for the same corporations for years, were suddenly laid off. Men and women in their forties started over as younger workers were hired to replace them for less pay. Company loyalty was not repaid in kind.

Then internal corruption made headlines with mishandled pension funds and poor business practices. Rich CEOs were handed golden parachutes and our government bailed out corporation after corporation.

But to be honest, I still had blinders on. It wasn’t until I began working with OLM that I learned how pervasive greed and corruption are in corporate America, how often death and environmental devastation result. How can anyone with a conscience work for these companies that have looked the other way when they realized their chemicals were polluting groundwater, that their mercury was contaminating the ocean and our seafood, that their pills might be the root cause of mass shootings, that their vaccinations caused an epidemic of autism?

Whatever we do, we need to stop burying our heads in the sand, pretending we don’t see what’s really going on.

Step one: stop buying their products.
Step two: tell your friends why they should stop buying their products.

If a company does not practice environmentally sound principles, if their products are not good for us or for the planet, we have the power to put them out of business. All we have to do is STOP BUYING THEIR PRODUCTS!

Big business did not build our economy; microenterprise built our economy—small businesses with five or fewer employees, often family owned and run enterprises. Let’s support those small businesses. Let’s buy our food from local farmers and CSAs. Let’s look online or better yet through the pages of OLM to find natural and organic products from microenterprises or small businesses. Buy smart, stay safe, protect the planet. It’s really quite simple.

Short Sighted – Diminishing Returns – Letter From the Editor

Studies showing that GMOs work and work well are accurate, to a point. Initially, yields are higher and farmers don’t need to spray as many herbicides or pesticides. In the long run, we read reports from all over the world claiming yields decline, super weeds are growing, and soil degradation is rampant.

Our society is one of short sighted vision. Our consumption model, which drives our people and our government, is also short sighted, resulting in increased debt and reliance on non-sustainable resources. It can’t last.

Pharmaceutical medications work the same way. You treat the symptoms (short term) not the cause (long term).

Companies are set up to make as much money as they can, as quickly as possible. When a company can no longer sustain its practices, it finds new ways, often corrupt ways, to maintain its profits. These methods often result in harming people and our environment in the long run.

Consider the fact that if Americans saved, spent money on what they needed, and refused to go into debt to buy “extras,” our economy would completely collapse.

Our society is comprised of pleasure seeking, quick fixing, short term results oriented, greedy consumers. That’s how we work. It can’t last forever.
