Phthalates Can Impair Children’s Brain Development

Research done by Project TENDR (Targeting Environmental Neuro-Developmental Risks) has shown that exposure to phthalates can be detrimental to children’s neurological development.

The American Journal of Public Health published Project TENDR’s peer-reviewed article where they’ve come to the conclusion that exposure to phthalates can impair brain development. The data showed an association between exposure to phthalates and an increased risk of learning, attention, and behavioral disorders. More than 30 studies from 11 different countries have shown similar results.

Recent data showed that 90% of those tested in Norway had plasticizers in their urine. Another study showed that children born from mothers in the highest quintile of urinary phthalate levels during their second trimester were three times more likely to be diagnosed with ADHD compared to children with mothers in the lowest quintile.

Phthalates are commonly found in food packaging and equipment for food production, as well as cosmetic products. Because they are so common in cosmetics, women are often exposed to higher levels of phthalates than men.

The mechanisms behind phthalates’ harms are varied, but the chemicals are known to disrupt organization and function of the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis, the system responsible for the management of stress and involved in the regulation of immune function and metabolic homeostasis. They may also inhibit fetal testosterone production and may also have antiestrogenic effects, which could have repercussions for brain plasticity.

To reduce your exposure to phthalates, avoid plastic products as much as possible and eat a diet that aids in detoxification, with lots of salads and cranberry lemonade.

Thirty-Four Women Report Spontaneous Miscarriages or Stillbirths After Receiving Covid Vaccine

More than three dozen cases of women experiencing miscarriages or stillbirths after receiving the COVID-19 vaccine have been reported to the Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System. It’s estimated that less than 1% of vaccine reactions are reported on VAERS.

The FDA, nor Pfizer or Moderna have commented on the cases filed with VAERS. The CDC has said that pregnant or nursing women who are part of groups recommended to get the vaccine, such as health care workers, can choose to get vaccinated.

And a 32-year-old woman in Virginia who was eight weeks pregnant reported having a miscarriage five days after being injected with the first dose of a Moderna vaccine in January. She had consulted with two obstetrics and gynecologists (OB-GYN) prior to receiving the vaccine on Jan. 14. She experienced abdominal cramping and vaginal bleeding two days later and had a miscarriage on Jan. 19. She had only been taking prenatal vitamins.

The World Health Organization does not recommend vaccination of pregnant women due to “insufficient data”. Pregnant women were excluded from trials originally, but Pfizer is currently conducting trials on 4,000 pregnant women in their second and third trimesters.

Moderna Begins Testing Covid-19 Vaccine On Children

Fifty-three million doses of the Moderna vaccine have been administered to Americans. On Tuesday, March 16th Moderna announced that they will begin vaccine trials on children ages six months to 12 years old.

Moderna is set to enroll with 6,750 pediatric participants in the U.S and Canada. The study will be broken into two parts. Part one will test participants ages 2-12 years old, in two doses. Part two will test participants ages six months to two years old in one of three dose levels.

Children in the study will be followed for 12 months after their second vaccine dose. A similar trial was started by Moderna in December of 2020, with 3,000 children aged 12-18.

We project that high school students will very likely be able to be vaccinated by the fall term, maybe not the very first day, but certainly in the early part of the fall for that fall educational term. Elementary school kids, we’re doing this what’s called age de-escalation studies to make sure it’s safe and immunogenic in them. They likely will be able to get vaccinated by the very first quarter of 2022.

It has already been shown that children are not the primary spreaders of the coronavirus. Additionally, previous trials have shown that side effects for the vaccine are even more severe for younger people.

Data Shows 1 in 3 New Zealanders are Nervous About COVID-19 Vaccines

The Ministry of Health surveyed around 1,400 participants in September of 2020 and again in December of 2020. Majority of participants (69%) are ready to take a “well tested and well approved” vaccine.

Nearly a quarter of respondents were nervous about the vaccine or indicated that they would be unlikely to receive a vaccine when offered. Another 16% of respondents will not accept a vaccine if offered.

Interestingly, there is an increase in vaccine hesitancy between September and December of 2020. Women, lower-income households, lower educational backgrounds, and parents with children in the house were all more likely to not take a vaccine. Safety is the major reason for hesitancy towards the vaccine.

More Research Links Poor Gut Health to Severe Covid-19

Numerous studies have shown a connection between poor gut health and severe covid-19. Research done in clinical trials has shown that probiotics can ease symptoms of covid.

Recently researchers have found a gut-lung connection. After looking at more than 1,000 patients infected with coronavirus, those with gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms had worse outcomes than patients without GI symptoms. This was done by Rush University medical center in Chicago.

Out of all the patients evaluated, 22.4% reported one GI symptom, most commonly nausea and vomiting. Another study with patients admitted to Standford health care found that 31.9% of patients had GI symptoms when they were admitted.

The links between poor gut microbiota and chronic diseases were made long before COVID-19. One of the underlying factors affecting the diversity of your gut microbiome is a Western diet that is characterized by a high intake of processed foods and sugar and a low intake of fruits and vegetables.

New Study in Mice Shows Weight Gain Depends on Gut Bacteria and Fungi

A new study published in Communications Biology has shown how mice with different gut microbiomes gain weight when eating processed food. Researchers examined how fungi in the gut microbiome changed the host’s metabolic reaction to refined and processed foods. The study used genetically identical mice with different fungal microbiomes. Researchers then fed mice regular mouse food, or processed food similar to that of an average American diet for six weeks.

The research showed that eating processed foods made most mice gain weight, but how much, and how their metabolism changed depended on the microbiome of the mice.

We found that mice whose gut microbiomes contained more of the fungi Thermomyces – which manufacturers use to break down fat in commercial processes – and less Saccharomyces – yeasts used in baking and brewing – gained about 15% more weight than the mice with different microbiomes. We found similar but smaller differences in mice on a normal diet.

Similar findings have been found true for humans as well. Research has shown that the average American has to work out more and eat less to maintain the same weight as 20-30 years ago.

Texas and Other States Loosen the Reigns on Coronavirus Restrictions

The governor of Texas has announced that “It is time to open Texas 100%” Many states have begun lifting restrictions put in place to protect against the Coronavirus.

Numerous states have lifted restrictions in some form, including Michigan, New York, Illinois, Louisiana, and Massachusetts.

This news is coming as President Biden, and health officials warn not to ease up on restrictions for fear of another surge in cases. President Biden has said that he expects to have enough vaccines for every adult by May.
