No High Fructose Corn Syrup!

Hansel and Gretel Had It Easy

We have all read, seen or listened to some variation of Hansel & Gretel from the Brothers Grimm. A witch lives in a deep forest luring children with an edible house and sweet treats hoping to fatten them up for her cannibalistic urges. The children turn the tables as befits fairy tale heroes and get out alive.

Well, according to the newest research from Princeton University published officially in Pharmacology, Biochemistry and Behavior1 and for the mass market in Science Daily2, Hansel and Gretel would be even fatter, slower and more lethargic eating today’s sweeteners like high fructose corn syrup because the weight gain from HFCS is far greater than ordinary sucrose. This would put the outcome of tricking the witch into her own oven in doubt.

HFCS is a corn derivative that typically has 55-percent fructose, 42-glucose and 3-percent other larger sugars. It is cheaper than sucrose in the United States where it is easier to grow corn than sugar cane or sugar beets. Sucrose is a naturally occurring blend of equally balanced fructose and glucose. HFCS replaced sucrose in the early 1970s and the rate of obesity as a population percentage has doubled from 15 to 33-percent since then according to CDC figures cited by Science Daily.

The researchers conducted two experiments. One compared male rats eating rat chow and HFCS water to similar rats eating rat chow and sucrose flavored water. The weight gain was described as “much for the rats eating the HFCS water. Thereally interesting fact about this study: the sucrose water was highly concentrated at levels similar to the few sodas sweetened with sucrose still in the US marketplace, but the HFCS water was half the concentration of the typical HFCS soda.

The second study lasting six months looked at high fructose corn syrup versus water. Here the rats ballooned up with 48-percent weight gains over rats just eating food and unsweetened water. The researchers described the high-fructose corn syrup rats as obese.

“These rats aren’t just getting fat; they’re demonstrating characteristics of obesity, including substantial increases in abdominal fat and circulating triglycerides,” researcher Miriam Bocarsly reported. “In humans, these same characteristics are known risk factors for high blood pressure, coronary artery disease, cancer and diabetes.”

The researchers speculated on the reasons why HFCS might be more fattening than sucrose. Apparently, fructose molecules in sucrose are bound to glucose molecules and take longer to hit the bloodstream than the fructose in HFCS, which aren’t bound to anything. The researchers also mentioned that fructose seems to be processed in the liver into fat, while sucrose is metabolized by insulin from the pancreas and is more readily used as an energy source.

“Some people have claimed that high-fructose corn syrup is no different than other sweeteners when it comes to weight gain and obesity, but our results make it clear that this just isn’t true, at least under the conditions of our tests,” says psychology professor Bart Hoebel, who specializes in the neuroscience of appetite, weight and sugar addiction. “When rats are drinking high-fructose corn syrup at levels well below those in soda pop, they’re becoming obese—every single one, across the board. Even when rats are fed a high-fat diet, you don’t see this; they don’t all gain extra weight.”3

The researchers cite previous research articles that show fructose affects hormones like leptin that work with insulin to control satiety, the feeling of being full.

This excerpt from the abstract says it all – “The combined effects of lowered circulating leptin and insulin in individuals who consume diets that are high in dietary fructose could therefore increase the likelihood of weight gain and its associated metabolic sequelae. In addition, fructose, compared with glucose, is preferentially metabolized to lipid in the liver.”4

Not feeling full induces more eating. In the meantime, we can imagine Hansel and Gretel being fed soda and other fructose-laden foods and winding up in the witch’s meat pie. End of story.

Uses for Baking Soda

Baking soda is a natural, inexpensive odor eliminator and cleanser with many personal and household uses.

Most of us know to place an open box or dish of baking soda in the fridge and freezer. But as an odor eliminator, baking soda has many other uses. It can be shaken into the bottom of trash cans, added to laundry hampers, and mixed into cat litter boxes. Sprinkle it on the carpet or the doggie bed and vacuum. Pour it down the sink to remove odors from the drain and garbage disposal. Leave an open box on the shelf in your closet. Add ½ cup to the wash to take smells out of laundry. And use it as an odor eater in smelly shoes.

As a cleanser, baking soda can be used dry, as a paste, or as a solution in waater. Use it with a damp sponge to clean the sink, tub, counter tops, or stove top. Use it as a paste to clean scuff marks, crayon on the walls, or any hard to clean item such as the outdoor grill, the oven, chrome on your car, or your silver. Baking soda in water can be used to soak items or to clean floors and walls.

Baking soda is also an amazing product for personal care. Use it as a toothpaste or mix it with water and work it through your hair instead of shampoo. A paste is great for bug bites and you can use it dry as a simple but effective deodorant.  A paste can also be used to exfoliate the skin or you can add baking soda to your bathwater for a soak. But be careful when you use it in the bath; it can make the bottom of the tub or shower quite slippery.

Last, but not least, don’t forget to leave an open box where you can quickly reach it in case of a fire on the stove.

Organic vs. Local

When it comes to produce, should we choose organic or local? The obvious answer is “both.” But when local, organic produce is not available, which is the greener and healthier choice?

People who vote for organic will argue that organic is always healthier because it is not genetically modified and is not sprayed with pesticides and herbicides. On the other hand, many of the eco-conscious cite the enormous carbon footprint involved in the transportation of produce. It is a bit ridiculous to buy organic California grown oranges in Florida and vice-versa. Buying locally not only saves on fossil fuels, it also keeps money in the local economy.

So, if you’re buying for health, you should always buy organic, and if you’re buying for environmental reasons, you should always buy local, right? Not necessarily.

Which is Healthier?

Locally grown fruits and vegetables may actually be healthier than organic fruits and vegetables shipped in from afar. While GMOs should be avoided at all costs, if health is your primary concern, try to find out if the farmer practices crop rotation. This is necessary to determine the nutritional value of the produce. Consider the distance organic produce travels with the substantial loss of enzymes and nutrients compared to fresh produce. And remember that organic farmers are allowed to use some harmful pesticides under many circumstances. Then consider the significant increase in vitamin and mineral content in produce grown on local farms that practice crop rotation.

The vitamins and mineral content of produce is not always higher when produce is organic, not when the nutrition is determined by the health of the soil and the freshness of the produce. While organic practices typically do promote healthier soil and more nutritious produce, with big business fully on the organic bandwagon soil quality is not always taken into consideration. Consequently, crop rotation, one of the best ways to help restore the soil, can be ignored.

The average person, that is, a person whose health is not degraded to the point where chemical sensitivities are an issue, would do better to ingest a little more pesticides with a lot more vitamins, minerals, phytonutrients, and enzymes. It behooves the consumer who shops in this manner to choose wisely. If buying conventional for health’s sake, conventional produce that typically contain the highest concentrations of pesticides, like berries and apples, should be avoided. It is likely that the increased benefits of local fresh strawberries are nullified by the enormous amounts of pesticides conventional farmers use to grow them.

Which is Greener?

When purchasing produce, we should consider long term ramifications of decisions. Voting with the pocketbook is the most powerful vote anyone can make considering its frequency and potential to evoke real change. Money talks. Every time a purchase of conventional produce is made a vote is cast for non-organic, environmentally harmful practices. Buying non-organic produce encourages everything the environmentally conscious stand against. Purchasing local conventional produce for the purpose of saving carbon emissions is penny wise and pound foolish.

To further complicate matters, the way food miles are calculated often misses a big piece of the puzzle. When purchasing an apple grown locally, for example, one should take into account the fact that the apple grown on a small scale farm may have arrived to the market via a small farmer’s pickup truck that traveled 65 miles to the market with around 100 apples or so. Compare this to a semi truck carrying two or three thousand apples. We can do the math to calculate the fuel consumed per apple, but in most cases, the math gets way too complicated. Farmers often bring their produce to large farmer’s markets in their area via their pickups and flatbeds, where the produce is shipped all over the country via tractor trailers.

A Better Idea

Ask the local grocery store manager if s/he carries local, organic produce. When shopping at farmer’s markets ask the vendors if they have organic produce and if they practice crop rotation. When the answer is no, move on. This is how change happens.

Even Better

Grow as much of your own food as you can.

Advanced Glycated End Products

Healthy Cooking Methods

How healthy are the various cooking methods? The answer depends on what you cook and how you cook it. If your idea of a healthy main course is blackened fish, crispy fried chicken, or caramelized ribs, you’ve probably never heard of advanced Glycated End Products (also known as advanced glycated end products).

Advanced glycated end products, which were discovered by Louis Maillard in 1912, are a class of chemical byproducts that result from the combination of protein and sugar (usually glucose) when food is cooked by excessive heat.1

Advanced glycated end products can also be formed by the body when too much refined sugar is eaten and elevated blood sugar levels are maintained for too long a time. And food manufacturers intentionally increase the number of advanced glycated end products in food, either by adding sugar or by browning food elements.

Advanced glycated end products aren’t to be confused with glycoproteins, even though they share the same building blocks. A glycoprotein forms when glucose and proteins bind using the normal digestive enzymes with which we all come equipped. This process presupposes gently cooked food and moderate sugar intake from whole fruits and vegetables and very little or no refined sugar. Glycoproteins are part of how the body feeds itself. Advanced glycated end products are something else entirely.

Humans evolved eating raw food and food cooked slowly over a small open flame. Today we cook food quickly and at high heat by flash heating, microwaving, deep-frying, and barbecuing. All of these methods form advanced glycated end products, which are difficult to metabolize and nearly indestructible.

Our immune system reacts to advanced glycated end products as foreign bodies. When our diet is inundated with advanced glycated end products, the immune system is overworked and becomes exhausted, which may lead to allergies or disease. advanced glycated end products spur the release of cytokines, which are part of the inflammatory process. Cytokines collect in the joints of people with arthritis. Another interesting fact about advanced glycated end products and inflammation is that free radical production is nearly five times greater with glycated protein compared to regular protein.4

Not all cooking methods are created equal. Studies have shown that boiling, steaming, or any method involving water tends to greatly limit the number of advanced glycated end products that form. Turning down the heat and extending the cooking time can also create fewer advanced glycated end products than other methods.

There are two different temperature ranges to be aware of: the heat labile point around 245° F and the much lower advanced glycated end products threshold between 120° F and 180° F. The heat labile point applies to fats and proteins that change chemically without the presence of sugar and has similar health risk as the advanced glycated end products discussed here.

How to Avoid Advanced Glycated End Products

  • Turn down the heat and extend the cooking time
  • Stop eating sugar (The average American eats 140 pounds of sugar per year.3)
  • Cook with water (boil, steam and poach)
  • Avoid processed foods which are likely to have sugar or browned food elements
  • Drink green tea (Recent studies have shown that green tea help remove advanced glycated end products from your body.4)

The following is a small sample of diseases and conditions that can be helped by limiting advanced glycated end products either by changing how we cook or cutting out the sugar:

  • Inflammation
  • Aging
  • Diabetes
  • Alzheimer’s disease
  • Macular Degeneration
  • Hypertension
  • Arthritis
  • Kidney Disease

This list is not inclusive, but is just enough for all of us to be mindful that how we cook our food is at least as important as what foods we eat.

Eating raw can help a person be healthier, but it can be a hard choice. In some cases, cooking is necessary for economic reasons like extending the shelf life of food. For example, cooking turns stale bread into toast, which tastes the same regardless of how fresh the bread was. Striking the balance between killing off pathogens in poorly stored raw food and overcooking has always been delicate. And for many people the practice of cooking is so ingrained in their culture that eating raw food is unthinkable.  So if you must cook, cook gently.

Crazy… – Letter from the Editor

It’s crazy, the idea that what we consume can cause disease. Everyone knows disease is something you catch, the card fate has dealt you, something out of your control. Toxins can accumulate in the body because of what we eat and due to our environment, sure, but this wacky idea that they have anything to do with cancer or other disease is a slippery slope. Next you’ll hear that reducing your body’s toxic load and getting the right nutrition can actually prevent disease. It’s as if these wacky people think our body’s cells actually depend on nutrition to function properly. Then we’ll hear really crazy things like nutrition can actually rid the body of disease!

I know, it’s sad. The people making these claims are obviously just greedy individuals trying to sell us something, unlike our pharmaceutical companies that actually care about their customers.
It really is a dangerous path, this whole “natural remedies” idea. Can you imagine what would happen to our beloved industries if people quit eating fast food on a regular basis, and demanded truly organic produce, and did not need to take pills for headaches and other symptoms of poor health? Sure, a few million lives would be saved, but do you have any idea what this would do to the stock market?!?!?

Back in the day, Dr. Gerson, that wacky cancer curing doctor who did all that cancer research many intelligent red blooded Americans were smart enough to ignore, was the first to adamantly oppose the tobacco companies. He suggested that people should not smoke. Not long after that, the American Medical Journal lost its largest source of advertising revenue, the tobacco companies. Thankfully our drug companies stepped up to fill the void.

Take a cheap multivitamin every morning, start an aspirin regimen, see your conventional doctor for regular checkups, be sure to get your recommended dosage of radiation via x-rays and mammograms and whatever else they offer, eat only pasteurized and/or cooked dead food, and pray for good health. Oh, and exercise, but don’t overdo it! Remember to stop all exercise before it becomes uncomfortable. And if you are not completely healthy, maybe exercise isn’t a good idea. </sarcasm>

Cure Cancer Naturally

Federal Law requires that we warn you of the following: Natural methods can sometimes backfire (as can “conventional” methods). If you are pregnant, consult your physician before using any natural remedy. Any opinions put forth by this publication, its doctors, staff, and contributors are simply their opinions. It is up to you to educate yourself and discuss treatment modalities with your health care practitioners. By accepting Organic Lifestyle Magazine’s advice, you are agreeing to be fully responsible for your own health and to hold Organic Lifestyle Magazine, Inc. and its contributors free from liability.
I am not a physician; I legally cannot tell you how to cure yourself of cancer. What I can tell you is what I would do if I were to be diagnosed with cancer, diabetes, or any other serious or “chronic” disease.

First and foremost, if you are looking to cure cancer the natural way, you need to accept that diet, more than anything else, is what got you here. And diet is what will get you back to a healthy state. Produce will become your best friend.

I would start by following a full body detoxification regimen that maximizes nutrition and minimizes toxins. Digesting food, even healthy food, can be taxing to the body. Juicing and proper food combining minimizes the load on the body, easily allowing it to assimilate nutrients and spend its energy on healing. In addition, if I were to follow this program, three things would happen to my body that are necessary to restore the body’s health: the liver would begin working again; the body would absorb and properly assimilate beneficial, anti-inflammatory fatty acids; and the body would become more alkaline.

To better understand fat, the liver and gallbladder, and health aspects of the body’s PH, be sure to click on the embedded links.

This diet has certain aspects of both Dr. Budwig’s and Dr. Gerson’s protocols along with a few key differences that I believe would help speed up recovery and healing.

Juicing

Juicing is a great aid in detoxification. First and foremost, I would purchase the right kind of juicer (this is an absolute must). A centrifugal juicer will not do. The juicer has to press the juice out without high speeds or heat to ensure phytonutrients, enzymes, and other beneficial components (many of which are yet to be discovered) are not damaged. And a good juicer won’t oxidize the juice. Unfortunately these kinds of juicers are slower, more expensive, and usually more difficult to clean.

To see a comparison of some of the best juicers, check out our next article, Best Juicer.

Supplements

I would not take multi vitamin or mineral pill form supplements for this diet for two reasons:

  • Even very high quality vitamin and mineral supplements can unbalance the body
  • This protocol provides enough vitamins and minerals in the best form possible with all of the important components needed to easily absorb and assimilate them.

I would, however, take truly whole food multivitamins and certain supplements to help kick start my immune system and my body’s ability to detoxify.

The most natural, absorbable, absolutely pure multivitamin/mineral supplement is Total Nutrion Formula. You can make your own or purchase here. There are supplements that have more, but this product makes for a complete foundation that will make it easier to absorb and assimilate nutrition from the rest of your diet. And remember, it;s not how many vitamins are on the label, it’s how much quality nutrition your body assimilates.

Other supplements include Udo’s Oil 3-6-9 with DHA (full spectrum of beneficial fatty acids), Thorne Vitamin D-5000Vitalzym Systemic EnzymesThorne SFF722 (kills candida), HM Complex (heavy metal detoxification), Echinacea Plus (immune system), Blood Detox Formula and Tea, and Coptis Chinensis Extract (immune system).

I would also supplement my diet with raw, unprocessed, high quality honey (1 teaspoon twice a day) and Himalayan salt (one teaspoon a day). While alternative and conventional health practitioners recommend staying away from salt, I use unrefined sea salt that is full of trace minerals. I believe the problems associated with salt are due to the use of refined table salt. But it doesn’t take much.

Exercise

For many reasons, I would continue to exercise. I’d exercise hard and work up a sweat. If I were out of shape, I’d work up to it; I believe too many people underestimate the benefits of serious exercise. Depressed people are more likely to get sick. A better mood can help heal the body and the mind. Exercising boosts the immune system, causes the body to release endorphins, and to release toxins. The body releases more toxins through the skin and from breathing than it does through urinating and defecating.

Hydrotherapy

I would also practice hot and cold hydrotherapy to help further detoxify my blood and break down tumors. Dr. Shillington has witnessed dramatic shrinkage of tumors in one day with multiple applications of hot and cold hydrotherapy.

Sunlight

I would sit in the sun for at least 15 minutes a day. Sunlight doesn’t cause cancer (though sunburn can). Sunlight has been proven to prevent cancer. Vitamin D from its most natural source is better than any pill form of vitamin D I could take.

Fruits and Vegetables

I would be buying a lot of produce. The better the quality of produce, the faster I’d attain my goals. I would find local farmers markets that sell produce from farmers who practice organic growing methods and crop rotation. Their produce is rich with enzymes, minerals, and all the other good stuff I’d need. I’d also need a wide variety of produce, some of which may not be available from locally grown or organic sources. So I would start a garden and grow as many of my own vegetables as possible.

Fruits and vegetables would all be juiced except for apples and pineapple which I would juice and eat raw. The apples would be green, like Granny Smith apples.  I would make every effort to choose fresh, local, organic produce. If I had to pick and choose which produce would be organic, I would always choose organic apples and berries and organic root vegetables like carrots, radishes, and beets. Apples and berries are over sprayed, while root vegetables absorb toxins from the soil.  These particular fruits and vegetables are shown to contain significantly higher amounts of pesticide residue.

I’d also look for variety. For instance, heirloom tomatoes and carrots are more nutritious than their conventional counterparts. The following would be my shopping list, and would be organic whenever possible:

  • Citrus Fruit (all varieties)
  • Green Apples (Red apples contain too much sugar. Absolutely must be organic.)
  • Beets (Great for detoxifying the blood and cleansing the liver. Look for different kinds. Must be organic.)
  • Ginger (Good for nausea and digestive problems. An anti-inflammatory that promotes healthy blood circulation. Always add to juice with beets, garlic, or radishes.)
  • Pineapple (Contains a massive amount of enzymes. Loaded with vitamins and minerals. I would not eat pineapple initially, if I were diabetic.)
  • Carrots (Must be organic.)
  • Spinach (Absolutely must be organic.)
  • Rainbow Chard (Provides antioxidant protection in the form of phytonutrients and vitamin C.)
  • Garlic (Garlic contains germanium, an anti-cancer agent.)
  • Spanish Black Radish (Protects against free radicals and aids the liver. Must be organic.)
  • Tomatoes (Contain large amounts of vitamin C, lycopene, courmaric acid, and chlorogenic acid, all of which help fight cancer. Must be organic.)
  • Parsley (Increases the antioxidant capacity of the blood. Is an anti-bacterial and a blood purifier. Improves digestion of fats and is high in enzymes.)
  • Cilantro (An anti-inflammatory that fights free radicals. Must be organic.)
  • Kale
  • Lemons (Aids the liver in flushing out toxins. Helps the kidneys flush out fluids. Great source of Vitamin C.)
  • Celery and Celery Leaves (Nutrients in the fiber are released during juicing. Leaves and stems provide a wide variety of vitamins and minerals.)
  • Blueberries (Massive amounts of cancer fighting antioxidants and a wide array of vitamins and minerals. Absolutely must be organic.)

Protein

If I decided I needed more protein after the first two weeks, I would add a vegan protein such as ground hemp seeds and/or ground flax seeds to the diet. Another good choice is Pure Green Protein. These are both amazing sources of protein, so I wouldn’t need much, just a few tablespoons.  This diet combined with a few tablespoons of either flax or hemp seeds will give most athletes enough protein. It’s actually much harder to assimilate protein from cooked meat. But it is important to make sure the hemp or flax seed is ground up so it can be digested. It doesn’t matter how much protein I consume; what matters is how much my body properly assimilates. It is important that I not eat any other nuts or seeds on this routine, so I don’t upset the fatty acid balance in the diet.

Food Combining

Apples can be combined with any fruit or vegetable juice, but I wouldn’t combine any other fruits with vegetables.

Lemonade Recipe

I would make lemonade with lemons, stevia, and cayenne pepper (ground or liquid extract). I’d make as much as I wanted and would drink as much as I could.  The first thing I would consume each morning would be warm lemonade. Lemon juice aids the liver in flushing out toxins.

Coffee Enema

The most unpleasant step in this routine is the coffee enema, a necessity for the very ill because the liver may be too weak to rid the body of toxins. As tumors are broken up and absorbed by the body, they also create toxins. If I were carrying a heavy toxic load and my body could not eliminate the toxins, I would die. This is not an exaggeration. I could do everything else perfectly, kill all the cancer cells, and still die due to an overburdened, toxic liver.

coffee beansThere is the possibility I wouldn’t need the enemas. Maybe I could use a liver supplement. Maybe just eliminating toxins would be enough. But if I had any concern about liver toxicity or knew my body was trying to absorb tumor tissue, I would do coffee enemas no matter how unpleasant they may be. Besides, even if I didn’t absolutely need them, they would speed up my healing.

It is extremely important that enemas for the liver are done properly. I wouldn’t use too much coffee and I would be sure the solution is not too hot.
The Gerson Protocol includes coffee enemas every few hours, but for regular detoxification most alternative health practitioners recommend two times once or twice a week. It is important to do at least two coffee enemas within the same day between four and six hours apart because the first enema causes bile to be dumped into the small intestine, which then needs time to pass the bile into the colon where the second enema can remove it.

I would decide frequency and duration based on my illness and toxicity level. If my body were continuing to absorb tumors, I would continue with enemas throughout that process. If my tumors were gone, I would restrict this practice to one or two months.

For more information on coffee enemas and how to do them see Coffee Enema.

Dr. Budwig’s Flaxseed Oil and Quark

quarkI’d love for this regimen to be 100% vegan, but Dr. Budwig’s program calls for quark or cottage cheese for a very good reason. I looked at several alternatives and am not comfortable with the efficacy of them.

When the body is sick, the liver is overwhelmed and it cannot properly process fats and essential fatty acids. Dr. Budwig discovered the combination of flaxseed oil and quark (a type of cheese which is high in sulphurated protein) makes the fats and essential fatty acids water soluble and easily used by the body’s cells. For more information and a step-by-step guide on this, check out Dr. Budwig’s Flaxseed Oil and Quark in this issue. I believe Udo’s Oil 3-6-9 with DHA is superior to plain flaxseed oil.

Heavy Metal Chelation

HM Complex is an orally administered metal chelator that mild environmental exposures of mercury, arsenic, cadmium, lead and tin without altering excretion of other minerals, including calcium, magnesium, iron, copper and selenium.

Step by Step

(Assuming a sleep schedule of 8 hours a night from 10pm until 6am)

Days 1-3

6am

Upon waking, I would make a half gallon of lemonade with the aforementioned recipe. I would heat up about 8 ounces and drink it.

I would then prepare and do the coffee enema.

Next I would blend ¼ of a cup of organic quark (or organic cottage, goat or sheep cheese if available) with 2 tablespoons of Udo’s Oil 3-6-9 with DHA. I would add a pinch of Himalaya salt (not even enough to taste) and a tablespoon of unrefined honey and eat.

Then I would exercise hard and get sweaty. After exercise I would complete hot and cold hydrotherapy. I like to go to the gym and do a nice workout and follow it up with the dry sauna turned all the way up for five minutes followed by 1 minute in a cold shower.

Note: I would drink lemonade as much as I can throughout the day, every day.

9am

I would take the above supplements with the juice of 2 apples, 5 carrots, 1 to 2 stalks of kale, ¼ a beet, to taste (this is assuming medium sized produce) or I would make citrus juice. I would alternate juices, depending on my mood and cravings.

12am

I would eat as much fresh pineapple as I wanted with a whole raw apple followed by the quark and Udo’s Oil.

3pm

6pm

My least favorite part of the day would be 6pm because I would follow a coffee enema with equally unpleasant juice. I would make apple juice for the base with garlic, beets, Spanish black radish, cilantro, parsley, tomatoes, and any other fresh vegetables. The garlic, beets, and Spanish black radish can and most likely will cause an upset stomach for a few minutes. How much of these vegetables I incorporate into the juice would depend on my tolerance at the time. (In my experience, tolerance for these juices builds over time).

9pm

I would make some more quark and Udo’s Oil to take along with the following supplements:

Days 4-7

The only difference between days 4-7 and days 1-3 is that Captomer should not be taken, and one may need to consider replacing it with Thorne Heavy Metal Support.

Week 2

The same as week 1, except eliminate Echinacea and Coptis Chinensis. Resume the following week and  continue to take them on alternate weeks.
I would repeat this week for 4 to 8 weeks depending on the severity of disease. Once I run out of supplements, with the exception of UDO’s Oil, I would simply quit taking them.

Month 2 (or Month 3)

I would come off of the coffee enemas. I would purchase one new supplement not mentioned above called Thorne Liver Cleanse SF769. My concern is that my liver may grow addicted to caffeine and will not work as well without the aid of supplementation.

I would continue this phase of the diet as long as it takes for me to feel that my health is at optimal working condition.

Coming Off the Diet

Coming off of a diet like this should be done gradually and carefully. Lots of raw fresh vegetables and fruits should always be one’s main staples, but especially so after a detoxification regimen and/or a fast. When coming off of this diet I would not eat starchy foods immediately. Doing so could actually kill me. My colon would no longer have what it needs to digest starchy foods like mashed potatoes or white rice.

I would start eating salads and smoothies first and, if I were to incorporate cooked foods, I would slowly include oatmeal, quinoa, and brown rice.

Conclusion

Knowing what I know about disease and health, this is exactly what I would do to restore my health, regardless of the disease. If I didn’t know what I know, I would do considerable research on alternative treatments and read everything and anything I could about Dr. Budwig and Dr. Gerson.

Remember, our health is our responsibility. Education is key.

Environmental Toxins Typically Do Not Cause Cancer on Their Own

In the film Healing Cancer from the Inside Out, narrator Mike Anderson explains that carcinogens provide the seeds for cancer, while a diet rich in animal proteins and fats (a typical Western Diet) provides the fertilizer.

To support his arguments, he reminds us that indigenous cultures eating traditional diets have low incidences of cancer. But when they begin eating western diets, cancer rates explode.

In Okinawa, cancer rates are extremely low in the midst of rampant environmental toxicity. When Okinawans immigrate to the United States and consume a Western diet, their cancer rates soar.

Anderson’s final argument is the surprising lack of correlation between smoking rates and lung cancer in the United States. While smoking rates have dropped significantly in the last 50 years, there has been no corresponding decline in lung cancer. Again—carcinogens and toxins are the seeds. Our unhealthy diet provides the fertilizer. Conversely, healthy foods provide the cure.
